Cana

A village in Galilee whose name echoes qaneh, a reed or measuring-rod — the setting of Jesus’ first sign, water turned to wine at a wedding (John 2:1–11), which John frames not as a bare miracle but as a sign that points past itself. A distinct name from Canaan, with which it shares only a sound.
